GWIA originated in Germany as a project of the Expo 2000.

Two preparatory GWIA events in 1998 and 1999 led to four week-long GWIAs during the summer of 2000.

Since then GWIAs have been conducted in New York (2001), Nairobi (GWIA 2003), Barcelona (2004) and Vancouver (2006).
